Hair Types and Humidity: Why Frizz Hits Some Codes Harder
Published 2025-04-01 · Updated 2025-04-05
Humidity reintroduces moisture into the hair shaft, causing hydrogen bonds in the cortex to shift. Types with more bends—especially 2C through 4C—show the change faster because the cuticle layers lift unevenly along the curves.
Straight types are not immune: 1C with coarse strands may still expand in tropical air even without curls. The difference is usually volume or frizz along the lengths rather than loss of curl clumps.
Anti-humidity products are tools, not moral judgments. Some people avoid silicones; others strategically use film-formers during monsoon season. Track results, not ideology.
Travel tip
Before a trip, note the destination’s typical dew points. If you are jumping from desert dry to coastal moist, pack a mini refresh spray and a gel with flexible hold so you can restyle without a full wash.
