2B vs 2C Hair: Which Wavy Type Are You?

2B and 2C sit next to each other on the wavy spectrum. The biggest difference is how close your hair is to forming true curls—and how much density and frizz you manage day to day.

2B waves are well defined but still read as open S-shapes. You may see some variation from root to tip, but the pattern is more “windswept wave” than spiral. Styling often revolves around enhancing definition while keeping the hair touchable.

2C is the deepest wave category before Type 3 curly hair. Strands are frequently thicker and coarser, and the pattern can look like loose curls depending on hydration and product. Frizz management and sulfate-free cleansing become more important as you move from 2B toward 2C.

Detangling differs too: 2B hair can often be carefully combed in the shower with conditioner, while 2C may require more patience and a wide-tooth comb or fingers only to avoid disturbing the wave formation.
