4A vs 4B Hair: Coil Pattern, Shrinkage, and Styling
Type 4 hair is extremely diverse, but 4A and 4B are often discussed together when people learn coil geometry.
4A coils retain a visible S-curve when a strand is stretched. The circumference is tight—picture a crochet needle—and shrinkage can be significant even though the curl looks defined when hydrated.
4B bends in sharper Z-shaped angles. The pattern may look less like classic curls in photos, but it has incredible versatility for twists, braids, and sculpted styles when moisture is sealed in.
Both types need gentle handling, but 4B’s geometry can make single-strand knots and breakage hot spots if you skip regular trims and nighttime protection.
